Sunday, 15th September
at Sommacampagna (Verona)
Around 100 wines will be on tasting, offered by 30 producers of Custoza. It will also be possible to compare the style in which local vignerons interpret Garganega in the Custoza blend with other expressions of the same grape variety.
“Custoza e Altra Garganega” is the title of the event that the Custoza Producers’ Consortium is organising at Sommacampagna in the Province of Verona, in the halls of the 17th century Villa Venier, on Sunday 15th September from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.. Entrance is free, and there will be around 100 wines available for tasting, poured personally by some thirty producers.
Custoza, the white wine from the hills between Verona and Lake Garda, is almost unique among the “historic” white Italian D.O.C.s in that it does not depend on a predominant variety but rather on a mix of grapes, concentrating in particular on indigenous cultivars: Garganega, Trebbianello (a local biotype of Tocai Friulano) and Bianca Fernanda (a local clone of Cortese). It is especially Garganega, though, that gives fruit and structure to the wine and, in order to highlight the style given to this grape by the vignerons in the zone, the Custoza Producers’ Consortium is now organising this event, during which it will be possible to try the vast majority of the local products (including the rare sweet passito version), comparing the wines of this D.O.C. also with a certain number of other interpretations of the same grape variety.
“Apart from the varietal aspect,” explains the President of the Custoza Consortium, Giorgio Tommasi, “this show is of interest because it allows one to taste the wines at the right stage of maturation, towards the end of summer, when Custoza’s fruity and floral qualities begin to merge with the mineral notes that derive from our morainic hills. This makes ours into a white with good ageing potential, a characteristic of Custoza that most lovers of white wines are still almost entirely unaware of”.
Exceptionally, Villa Venier, owned by the Municipality of Sommacampagna, will be open to the public for the occasion: it will therefore be possible to see close up the restoration work that is taking place in and on the building. The tasting areas will be divided up between the ground and first floors. Outside, in the park in front of the building, there will be an exhibition and market of high-quality food products from the Verona and Lake Garda areas, whilst the kitchens will offer typical dishes of the zone. At the same time as “Custoza e Altra Garganega”, Villa Venier will also host the event entitled “Custoza Plus”, a special tasting for journalists and bloggers organised by the Commune of Sommacampagna, which begins on 14th September.
